Go forth and enjoy your capital with ease!
Even for those who live on the tube, getting to central London is often accompanied by an early start, various bags/coats, and making sure you know when the last train home is.
There is however a better way, and the Cavendish Hotel on Jermyn Street believes it has the answer. We were invited along to see how staying in a central London hotel makes the difference - and boy did they prove it!
How to get there
When overnighting in the heart of the city, your hotel room becomes a home away from home, peaceful sanctuary and handy for changing from day-wear into evening-wear. Although we live on three tube lines, London's roads at the weekend are free from congestion charge, relaxed and actually cheaper when you figure the cost of return train tickets, taxis and the like. The Cavendish has this covered with private valet parking under the hotel, at £40 per night. My recommendation for the in-car music, music choice is Deathcab's new album Kitsungi.
It's also right nearby Piccadilly Circus and Green Park tube stations. More directions etc are here (but totally go by car, the valet parking is a great luxury touch)
The Rooms and Local Area
Located slap bang in the middle of our great metropolis, the Cavendish Hotel is on the doorstep of favourite shopping and dining destinations, and with the allure of various stage lights so close, the sparkling West end has rarely been so accessible.
Having stayed in far too many hotels away from home, it's great to see these rooms are as well specified as you'd hope. Having an iron and board already in the room is great, no need to wait in your underwear whilst reception brings one up! A hotel room cuppa is always a tricky thing, and with the price of coffee machines these days it would have been good to see one here. Still, a vast selection of drinks and food is available via a prompt and polite room service which more than fulfils the wants of most.
Wifi is fast and free, covers the whole hotel and needs no annoying code system, very handy when you have multiple devices to add. Most of us have laptops, phones and iPads, and decent communication is vitally important for business travellers, not just for work, but to stay in touch with family when away from home.
After retiring to the sanctuary of our room to get ready for the evening, knowing we were only a few minutes from the party was a dream, especially with the eternal "which dress, which make-up and which accessories?" troubles 😉 - Removing the journey made it all so much more relaxed.
With so much choice in London we're very often blinded by the massive array of choices, and hotel's own websites are often devoid of any real knowledge, rather they concentrate on getting your booking, and little else. The Cavendish happily also features updates about goings on in the hotel, and useful information about the local area. For example, for world Earth Day 2015 they supported this Eco-awareness initiative buy turning off many of the appliances around the hotel. Loving the effort! Click Here
Thoughtfulness has also extended to every aspect of your visit, they have a pinterest board with interesting local restaurants, with walking times. Click Here
It's these little differences that can really make a difference to choosing a hotel, it's a big city!
London's evening entertainment is unparalleled so you're unlikely to dine in the hotel restaurant unless you're staying more than a few nights. That said however the Petrichor Restaurant is well worth a visit if you're a foodie. Proud holder of 2 AA Rosettes, the Restaurant’s seasonal British menu marries traditional favourites with more contemporary and imaginative fare, complemented by an excellent wine list. We chose the Cavendish Afternoon tea is the perfect after-shopping/pre-evening treat.
Afternoon Tea and Breakfast
The glorious institution that is the Afternoon Tea is really a combination of two things, namely the setting, and the food. Without doubt we had both supplied in great measure. Yes, there are more famous locations but don't pass up an opportunity to try this gem of an experience; Set in comfortable and pleasant surroundings, the service provided is mind blowing. I visited with my fiancée, it being her Birthday the occasion suited perfectly. Never have we been made to feel more special and welcomed than by our waiter Andrew. Very friendly with an air of positive professionalism and easy politeness, this guy must win employee of the month. Every month.
The finely presented no-crust sandwiches had super soft fresh bread, and fillings which were both inventive whilst staying true to their classic roots. Great tea menu, we chose oolong, champagne and outstanding proper coffee with a decent crema (so many just do bad filter so this was good to see.)
Scones & Pastries
Freshly baked fruit scone & orange scones with
Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam & lemon curd
Selection of mini British afternoon Tea Pastries
English peppered beef pastrami, wasabi mayonnaise, rocket leaves
Loch Duart smoked salmon, beetroot cream cheese, pickled cucumber
Aldwych goat’s cheese, caramelised onion chutney, alfalfa sprouts (V)
Norwegian prawns, lemon parsley Aioli
The next morning breakfast was served using local ingredients, and their sourcing is explained with pride everywhere you look, and stop press - this was a hotel breakfast with a DECENT BRITISH SAUSAGE! (Ok, so I may stay in too many places that do 'Chicken Sausage', but this was a great change to find a real sausage, not a cheap shrivelled excuse.
Upon receiving our car from the valet we were pleased to see the service extends even after you leave - mints and water are a great touch and their inclusion really does show how far the Cavendish Hotel goes to make you feel cared for in the lap of luxury and with professional ease.
All the staff were polite, attentive and well trained which is perhaps where the Cavendish shines brightest. It's not the most flash, most famous or most expensive hotel in London but it doesn't need to be; it's perfect for what you need and we left feeling happy and impressed.
The Cavendish provides effortless luxury and excellent service in the vibrant heart of London
